LGD has joined the Micro led new project
According to Korean media reports, LG Display is developing inspection and repair process technology to detect and repair defective pixels in micro light-emitting diode (LED) panels.
According to industry insiders, LG Display has been participating in the national research and development project for Micro LED inspection and repair promoted by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Energy since April last year, which has been confirmed. The R&D project is jointly participated by Ulsan University of Science and Technology (UNIST), Korea Display Industry Association, Hubio and Justem.
In order to realize the commercialization of Micro LED, the overall process technology including transfer, bonding, inspection and repair must be stabilized.
This overall project, called the "Inorganic Light-emitting (iLED) Display Technology Development and Ecosystem Construction Project", was implemented last year and will continue until 2032, with a total scale of 484 billion won (approximately RMB 22.409 billion). Inorganic light-emitting displays are a concept covering next-generation light-emitting technologies, including MicroLEDs.
The specific tasks of the project include "developing inspection and repair technology for small and medium-sized micro LED display panels with replaceable chips" and "developing inspection and repair technology for panels with non-replaceable chips". The execution time of each task is about 45months.
As a panel manufacturer, LG Display plays the role of the demand side and is responsible for process verification and performance evaluation. The project adopts a model in which equipment manufacturers and research institutions develop inspection and repair process technologies, while LG Display verifies them from the perspective of actual production applications.
From the perspective of industry development, with the cross-penetration of display technology routes, the collaboration and integration between panel companies and the LED display industry continues to deepen, and panel manufacturers have become an important force in promoting the large-scale development of Micro LED with their glass-based drive, high-yield manufacturing and terminal ecological capabilities.
